The Art of Web Design: Tips for Designing a Website

Websites are works of art, and designers are the artists. Just as in any art, web designs need to follow some artistic guidelines. The following are some web design tips to help designers create the most beautiful website.

Use Color

Obviously, color is very important in art, but color is just as important in web design. Some guidelines that make color work for your website include the following: make it easy on the eyes, make text areas easy-to-read, make colors mesh, and use colorful pictures to highlight the business. First, colors used in websites should never be neon colors or bright colors. Blues, greens and yellows are easiest on the user’s eyes, so use these colors most often and save other colors for highlights. Next, text areas should be white or cream with black text. This is easier for users to read, which makes the text more user-friendly. The next idea, meshing colors, makes the design more pleasing. In this application, using the color wheel to make colors agree with one another is very important. Finally, pictures used can be colorful and eye-catching, but the photography should always reflect the business values to highlight the website’s purpose.  There are some really good open source programs like GIMP that allow you to edit and manipulate images for your website and for the more creative designers, Blender is a great program for the creation of image art and animation.  When using these programs one is likely to need another open source program like 7 Zip which compresses large files and makes them easier to upload to the website.

Lay It Out

Layout is also a very important part of website design, and the idea behind the website’s purpose and layout should always be given an extraordinary amount of thought before the design is complete. Color can be a great starting point, but the layout is the bones of the design. Main page layout is especially important because it is the first impression for the customer. A clean, intuitive layout can make a website, so lay it out before committing to the design.

Art principles can help a website succeed, and the color and layout are no exceptions. Carefully planning the design is the best way to make sure your website will be viewed as often as possible.
